There is something about a classic cup of tea served in classic teaware while wearing classic clothes and having classy conversation that is worth talking about (bring me a chaise lounge!). Afternoon tea at the Langham Hotel is just such a classic experience. This is not a 'white glove' style British service, but a more relaxed, friendly version that still includes the traditional whole nine yards: Tea of your choice served in Wedgwood teaware, towering plates of tea sandwiches, sweets and scones, in a beautiful room with an equally beautiful view of the grounds.
The tea offering is a short but quality list. I had their Langham Blend which includes Assam, Darjeeling and Sri Lankan teas - a perfect blend to walk arm in arm with heavy sweets and scones. I like the way it was brewed - strong enough to stand up to sugar and milk but not so strong you could clean your engine with it. Our teacups were never empty much to the credit of our server Lauren.
Special thanks to Patrick Ian Moore for the experience and to our wonderful server Lauren. If you find yourself on the golden coast of California, USA there are many hotels that offer a wonderful afternoon tea, count the gorgeous Langham Pasadena among them. So if you feel like getting a little of your Downton Abbey on this is a nice place to start.
